General Information

Windows and Mac users - binary packages are available for both platforms (look for the Win32 exe or disk images in the tables below).

Linux users - an AppImage for 64-bit machines is available which should, in theory, run on any modern Linux distribution, and does not require any installation. Otherwise, unless you're an OpenSuSE LEAP user, compiling from source may be the best option. To use the AppImage, download it then make it executable before you attempt to run it. For instance:

user@pc:~> chmod u+x Aten-2.1.6-Linux64.AppImage
user@pc:~> ./Aten-2.1.6-Linux64.AppImage

Command-line options to Aten can be passed to the AppImage in the same way as you would do if you were running the Aten binary directly.

All accompanying data files (forcefields, scripts, examples etc.) are contained within the AppImage, and which are made available when running the AppImage as detailed above. If you need to access these files without running Aten you can do so by calling the AppImage as follows:

user@pc:~> ./Aten-2.1.6-Linux64.AppImage --appimage-mount

This will mount the AppImage on a temporary mount point (which is printed out) and to which you can navigate and access all the data distributed with Aten.

The source code is hosted at GitHub and can be retrieved using either subversion or Git with one of the following commands:

Version 2.1.6

Version 2.1.6 reintroduces (or is reintroducing) GAMESS-US support, and adds the possibility for Tools plugins in the GUI.

Version 2.1.0 - 2.1.5

Version 2.1 marks a departure from the old filters system, replacing them with a standard plugin-based system. Plugins for the existing complement of file formats supported by Aten have been largely reintroduced in this version, with improvements (notably speed) made along the way. Some are still under testing and other functionality may be missing, but fixes will be introduced regularly.

Version 2.0

Version 2.0-beta, available officially for download in April 2016, represents a significant rewrite of, primarily, the user interface and rendering subsystems, but with many other hundreds of fixes and improvements along the way. The version is now stable enough for general use, but some features may still be missing.

Note that the downloads here will be updated as and when fixes / improvements are made, which is usually on a weekly basis at worst, so check back regularly!

Version 1.9

Version 1.9, released in February 2015, is the latest static version available. This will be the last release of Aten in its current incarnation, ahead of the 2.0 release currently under development. At present, only minor fixes to the current release (1.9) are being published, while the current (unstable) revision moves up to 2.0. This will be a major release for Aten, and will feature a completely redesigned GUI, and many fixes and feature enhancements throughout.
